Walsh puts on a show as Broncos win fifth straight Broncos to continue top four push

The Broncos beat the Titans 26-14 in their Queensland derby with Reece Walsh and Ben Talty starring for the visitors, while Jojo Fifita grabbed a double at Cbus Super Stadium.

The Broncos took an early lead with a penalty goal to Adam Reynolds.

Brendan Piakura failed a HIA in the first half after suffering a nasty head knock while attempting to score a try.

In just his second NRL game, 26-year-old Ben Talty crossed for his maiden NRL four pointer.

Talty ran a nice line onto a terrific Adam Reynolds cut out ball and proved too strong for three Titans defenders to turn in the tackle and score.

Broncos stars Reece Walsh and Kotoni Staggs were captured in a heated on-field disagreement, but the two put it behind them to combine for a brilliant try soon after.

The Broncos were out of sorts for much of the first half and after one of the team’s many errors, Walsh and Staggs exchanged words in what appeared to be a fiery confrontation.

“This is the way he plays,” Fox League’s Bryan Fletcher said of Walsh.

“He is high emotion and he thinks his right centre should have caught that ball.”

There was clearly not much to it as Staggs and Walsh would combine brilliantly for a Broncos try in the 42nd minute.

Walsh then showed off his freakish athleticsism with a stunning double backflip for Try July.

The Titans later scored their first try through Jojo Fifita.

Fifita dived over for a double as the Titans set up a grandstand finish.

But Billy Walters sliced through to score as the Broncos made it a 12-point game going into the final 15 minutes and they held on to keep their top four hopes alive while the Titans are all but certain to win the wooden spoon.

WALSH STARS AS HUNT MAKES SUCCESSFUL RETURN

Reece Walsh put on another masterclass as Ben Hunt made a successful return from nine weeks out with a foot injury.

Walsh finished with 123 metres from 12 runs to go with three tackle busts, an offload, two linebreak assists, a try assist and a try in a brilliant display.

Hunt was solid without being spectacular at hooker with 28 tackles and just two misses and some slick service from dummyhalf.

Mid-season recruit from the Bears Ben Talty also scored his first try in the NRL in a solid outing that included 106 metres, five tackle busts and 20 tackles to go with his four pointer.

PIAKURA’S NASTY KNOCK

Broncos forward Brendan Piakura failed a HIA following a heavy head knock in the act of trying to score a try.

Piakura won the chase for a Adam Reynolds grubber and looked to have grounded it before hitting his head flush on the ground.

He lay motionless for a few seconds before coming off for a HIA.

However, to rub salt into the wounds, the try was taken off the Broncos with the Bunker determining that Piakura knocked the ball on.

“He’s not in a good way at all,” Cooper Cronk said on Fox League.

Piakura looked very groggy when coming from the field before failing his HIA.

Luckily for the Broncos and the star back rower, the team has a bye next weekend, meaning Piakura should be right for Brisbane’s next game against the Eels on July 25.

FIFITA’S LONE HAND AS HASLER’S TIME IS UP

There weren’t many bright spots for the Titans, but Jojo Fifita was one of them with a classy double keeping his side in the contest.

Fifita finished with 88 run metres, from nine runs, a tackle bust and tires in the 48th minute and 57th minute as the Titans mounted a late comeback.

Unfortunately, it was not enough for the Titans, who are now out of the finals race, which has triggered a clause that will likely mean the end of Des Hasler’s tenure at the club.
