‘Are we changing the rules now?’: Flanno baffled after ‘disappointing’ Bunker controversy

Dragons coach Shane Flanagan couldn’t have been prouder with his team’s upset win over Cronulla, but admitted he was left confused by two refereeing decisions.

The giant-killing Dragons made it back-to-back upset victories with a 22-14 win to snap their losing streak against Cronulla.

However, frustrated fans are feeling confused just weeks out from the finals after what looked to be a superb try-saving tackle from Tyrell Sloan turned into a controversial penalty try to the Sharks.

Sharks forward Teig Wilton flew high to reel in a high kick but was brilliantly denied by Sloan who held him up over the line, only for the Bunker to rule that the winger had stopped contesting for the ball and had tackled his opponent in the air.

“Wow, that’s all I can say,” Flanagan said, upset with a number of calls including a penalty against Luciano Leilua.

“I’ll have a busy day on Monday because it’s making it so hard on us. I won’t say any more on it, but I was really disappointed with a lot of decisions.

“I’ll have to look at it closer because in the box we only had eagle cam. There have been plenty of them this year, so for the Bunker to rule penalty try when the on-field referee ruled no try (was tough).”

Flanagan was also asked about decision to penalise Leilua in the first half for impeding Will Kennedy

Leilua was penalised for blocking Kennedy as he chased through his own kick, with Butler awarding the Sharks a penalty but ruling out a professional foul.

“The Luciano one frustrates me. I’ve been involved the game for most of my life and you’re allowed to run back to the ball and get in front of it,” Flanagan said.

“You see blokes block, get in front of it and put their arms out and block you from getting near the ball.

“So, wait a second. Are we changing the rules now?”
