‘I’m not shopping him’: Braith clears air over Munster after Bellamy’s Bears reveal

Speculation over Cameron Munster’s future has been rife but his manager Braith Anasta has declared the situation a “non-event” despite Storm coach Craig Bellamy seemingly being open to losing the superstar half.

There have been rumours the incoming Perth franchise could make a mammoth offer of close to $2 million a season for Munster, who is off-contract at the end of 2027.

Addressing the speculation on Wednesday, Bellamy made it clear the club wanted to keep the Test and Queensland star, but also accepted the prospect of the 31-year-old moving on was a reality.

“Cameron’s got to do what’s right for him and at the end of the day if that’s going to Perth, it’s the best thing for him and his family. What he’s done for our club, we’re not going to be dirty on that,” Bellamy said.

“But we’d love to keep him at our club and we’ll do everything we can to keep him.”

NRL 360 host Anasta, who manages Munster, took the opportunity to “clear a few things up” in discussing Bellamy’s comments.

“Cameron doesn’t want to leave Melbourne and Melbourne dont want to let him go. At the moment it’s all just speculation,” Anasta said.

“One thing is for sure, I’m not stopping him to Perth. I’m not allowed to shop him to Perth, but also, I don’t need to.

“It’s a unique situation because you’ve got a new franchise which doesnt come along too often and they could have interest in him or in building a team around him as a marquee player. Then you’ve got Melbourne Storm who are trying to fit five or six players, superstars  into their salary cap.”

Speculation about Munster joining the Bears has included suggestions he could even be released by the Storm early but Anasta again stressed none of those talks had taken place.

“The scenario as it is, nothing is going to change. He’s going to be at Melbourne for the next couple of years and that’s it,” Anasta said.

“If anything changes and there comes a point where all of us have got to come together and have a chat about it, we will, but right now there’s really nothing to talk about unless things change in terms of who they sign and where the cap is at and all that. Right now it is a non-event.”

NRL 360 panellists and commentator Dan Ginnane felt it was notable that Bellamy mentioned only the Bears in his comments about Munster.

“He made it clear they want to keep him but there was something about the way he talked about Perth. … it seems very specific that Melbourne are comfortable with Cam going off to Perth. That’s what it feels like.

“And how old is he … 31? He could make a lot of money in Perth and that’s why I think they probably won’t want to stand in his way.”
