‘There’s a lot of life after football’: Red V enforcer puts health first in NRL retirement

Dragons veteran Tom Eisenhuth has called time on his 83-game NRL career, revealing his decision came down to “putting my family first”.

The 32-year-old joined the Red V from the Storm ahead of the 2024 season, becoming one of Shane Flanagan’s most consistent players.

In his first season at the Dragons, he won the ‘Immortals Award’ which is presented to the player who coaches believed drove standards within the squad.

However, a head knock during the 2025 pre-season left him with lingering concussion symptoms which returned during his only appearance of the season in NSW Cup.

That left Eisenhuth to consider his future in the game before deciding to hang up the books.

“This is a health decision based on putting my family first,” Eisenhuth said in a club statement.

“There’s a lot of life after football. I want to be able to make the most of that and spend that time with my family.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the club, the coaching staff, all my teammates and everyone in rugby league who’s helped me out over the years.”

Flanagan praised the impact of Eisenhuth on the Dragons squad since arriving, saying: “Tom has been a wonderful asset to our team both on and off the field in his time here.

“Last year he was one of our most consistent players and never let anyone down.

“We’re all really disappointed that he’s had to finish up early but we understand at this stage of his career he has to put his health and his family first.

“And we’ll continue to support him in whatever way we can as he continues to add value to the team and club in an off-field capacity moving forward.”

Eisenhuth ends his playing days after stints at the Panthers, Storm and Dragons.
